VERTU ASCENT T1

Price: $6999.99

Inspired by the sculptural lines of big-engined supercars, the muscular case is hewn from solid titanium for the best possible strength-to-weight ratio. Forged at 850 degrees in an 800-ton press, it is engineered so precisely that when the two halves are bolted together, the seam is all but invisible.

The screen, the camera lens and flash are all protected by sapphire crystal so hard that it must be cut and polished by diamond-tipped tools. The ear pillow is made from the same ceramic material that protects the Space Shuttle. Even the logo is made from a material used to strengthen industrial drill bits.

Exclusively developed by Vertu, Vertu Fortress wirelessly backs up your phone’s contact and calendar information. From anywhere in the world, a single click backs up your date to ultra-secure servers maintained in an ex-military underground bunker in England. ETEN GLOFiSH X610 MOBILE PHONE

Price: $849.99

OVERVIEW:
Today E-TEN announced its latest affordable addition to its Glofiish lineup of Windows Mobile Professional powered smartphones, the X610.

E-TEN's new finger touch UI extensions, which we first saw under NDA at the 2008 Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, have an HTC TouchFLO-like appearance and provide users with 3D effects and large, finger-friendly buttons and icons to make it easier to control the X610 one-handedly, without the need for a stylus (which is still included). We haven't seen the final version of the software, but what we saw in February looked promising.

Details on the X610 are otherwise a bit sparse, other than the fact that it has a built-in GPS module, but the device does seem to be the obvious successor to the X600, a smartphone equipped with a QVGA touchscreen display and quad-band GSM/EDGE network support. One thing is certain, though, the X610 runs the latest version of the Windows Mobile Professional OS: 6.1.

Update: E-TEN has told us that the x610 supports quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity. It sports a 400MHz Samsung processor, and has 128MB of internal flash and 64MB of application RAM. It has a 2 megapixel fixed focus camera out back, and a 2.8" QVGA resolution main display. The X610 also sports a microSD card slot for storage expansion, Bluetooth and WiFi, and a built-in FM radio. The device weighs 132g (4.7oz) with its 1530mAh battery in place, and measures up at 107mm x 58mm x 14.7mm (4.2" x 2.3" x .6").

First Google phone on sale this month

After several false starts, the first Google-powered mobile phone - HTC's Dream - will go on sale in Australia on Optus post-paid plans from the middle of this month.

But the Dream, sold overseas as the G1, could be rendered obsolete before it even arrives as a US telco executive has said a successor would be launched overseas "in the coming weeks and months".

It also faces tough competition from Apple's iPhone, which has similar features but a more elegant design, analysts say.

The 3G touch-screen device has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, 3.2-megapixel camera and the ability to synchronise email, calendar, contacts and documents stored on Google's suite of online applications in realtime.

The phone, based on the Google Android operating system, will initially only be available on plans from Optus starting on February 16.

Exact details of the plans have yet to be announced but there will be four plans, starting at $59 a month, while monthly data allowances will range from 500MB to 3GB. Customers will be locked into two-year contracts.

Last year, Melbourne consumer electronics maker Ruslan Kogan made waves when he announced his brand, Kogan, would begin selling the first Android-powered phone by Christmas. The launch was pushed back until January 29 but, on January 16, Kogan announced he was aborting the release, citing "potential future interoperability issues".

The Dream, sold in the US and Britain since October last year, is the only Android phone on the market today. The Australian launch will be the first time an Android device has been sold in the Asia-Pacific region.

But other manufacturers including Motorola, Lenovo, Sony Ericsson and Samsung have all announced plans to begin selling phones based on the Google operating system this year.

While Optus is the first Australian telco to take a punt on Android, Telstra appears to be cool on the idea.

In a recent interview with CNET News.com, Telstra chief executive Sol Trujilo said the company was looking at testing Android but so far it "isn't at the stage where it's really robust".

"It's still in evolution right now. It's very Google-centric. And there are limitations. We are hopeful that it will be more open, because it offers a great alternative operating platform. But it's not there today," he said.

Meanwhile, loss-making handset maker Motorola announced during its fourth-quarter earnings call this week that it was shifting its focus from the Windows Mobile platform to Android. It will unveil its first Android-powered device in the second quarter of this year.

Like the iPhone with its App Store, the G1 supports third-party applications that can be accessed for free on the device from the Android Market. Analysts have predicted that the Google platform might have trouble attracting software developers because, unlike Apple's App Store, Google doesn't allow them to charge for accessing applications.

The phone also comes preloaded with a suite of Google online applications including Gmail, Google search, Google Maps, Google Calendar, Google Talk and YouTube. YouTube has been redesigned to be speedy and intuitive on a mobile screen, while, with Google Maps Street View, users can pan the view 360 degrees just by moving around with the phone.

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi said she believed "demand for the G1 will be much lower than for the iPhone", which she said had a more "sleek" and "iconic" design. But she said the G1's tight integration with Google services such as Street View was a unique selling point.

"The phone will provide a taste of what the Android platform is capable of, but we expect teething issues and some limitations," Milanesi said.

"The main challenge for Google and its manufacturing partners will be to come up with interesting devices with a very good UI [user interface] and accompanying services that appeal to consumers."

But the G1 could already be obsolete by the time Australians pull it out of the box. T-Mobile's senior VP of engineering and operations, Neville Ray, said in a recent interview with Fierce Wireless that more G-series Google phones would be launched "in the coming weeks and months".

A seven-minute video of what appears to be the G1's successor was leaked on the internet last month.

Coming soon - Sony Ericsson's Premier 3 Walkman Phone

If you can get past the hot pink, Sony Ericsson's Premier 3 Walkman phone has a really cool look. Plus it has some interesting features—including the ability to rip music directly from a CD.

The Premier 3 is part of Japanese phone company KDDI's Spring 2009 line-up and it features a beautiful 3" (480×854l) display, 3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS, Infrared and a dedicated remote control. If you want to rip music from a CD, all you need to do is plug the player into the remote via a 3.5mm plug and you are good to go.

With such a large screen and MP3 capability, you would think that the Premier 3 has the potential to be an awesome portable media player—but Sony Ericsson inexplicably shot themselves in the foot with a MicroSD slot that can only handle 2GB cards (there is only 50MB onboard). What a waste. Pricing and release information have not been announced.

Sony Ericsson W61S with 5-Megapixel Camera

Sony Ericsson introduced W61S the new 5.1-megapixel camera phone from the Cyber-shot series with 3x optical zoom and smile shutter technology. This slider phone features “Exmor” CMOS matrix, the same sensor technology (analog-digital converter) from Sony’s Alpha DSLR.

The W61S can work in CDMA 1 X WIN networks supporting EV-DO Rev.A technology, and supports Bluetooth, so the user can feel free without wires. GPS-functionality enhances photo capabilities of the phone: when you take a picture, the phone records the info from the GPS-receiver about the place, and then you can see it on a PC map.

In addition to photo and GPS the new Cyber-shot phone can boast of a big widescreen 2.8” TFT VGA display, which can be used as a pocket TV display. If the this display isn’t big enough for you to share the content, the developers added a video out.

Sony Ericsson W61S Specifications:

* Networks: CDMA1X WIN
* Dimensions: 50x114x22 mm
* Weight: 149 g
* Display: 2.8” widescreen, 480x800 pixels, 262K colors
* microSD storage cards
* Camera: 5.11-megapixel, CMOS
* Payment, music and navigation services

Sony Ericsson K-series with GPS in the wild

Obviously Sony Ericsson are in for a major announcement with a spanking new
K-series Cyber-shot handset that is obviously loaded with goodies. The
Chinese-based website pconline.com.cn has revealed details and live photos
of the device.

In this K-series’s styled in a conservative form factor and a rather
controversial color combo, the new K-series handset sports a 3 megapixel
auto focus camera (it’s not a 5 megapixel one, trust us, we’ve seen it) and
a dual-LED flash. But that’s not all that this handset is about.

K-series this new puppy will be among the first Sony Ericsson handsets to
feature a built-in GPS receiver. The software part of the GPS navigation is
ensured by the Location Services menu we also saw in the Sony Ericsson
W890, for K-series will includes applications such as Google Maps, Favorite
places, etc. This time however the menu has an even expanded functionality
in order to make the most out of the integrated GPS receiver.

The new Sony Ericsson K-series’s handset will be positioned somewhere above
Sony Ericsson K770 and Sony Ericsson K850. If you ask us though it looks
rather reminescent of some older Sony Ericsson T-series handsets, so maybe
a T-series designation will be more like it.

Apple iPhone 3G - 16GB, black

Just over a year after Apple birthed the first iPhone, the long-awaited, next-generation iPhone 3G has arrived bearing a mildly tweaked design and a load of new features. With access to a faster 3G wireless network, Microsoft Exchange server e-mail, and support for a staggering array of third-party software from the iPhone App Store, the new handset is the iPhone we've been waiting for. It still lacks some basic features but when compared with what the original model was year ago, this device sets a new benchmark for the cell phone world.

With the iPhone 3G, Apple appears to have fixed some call-quality performance issues we had with the previous model--in our initial tests, the volume is louder with less background buzz than before. The 3G reception could be improved, however. Music and video quality were largely unchanged, but we didn't have many complaints in that department to begin with.

Price may well remain our largest concern. New AT&T customers and most current AT&T customers can buy the iPhone 3G for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model. If you don't qualify for that price--check your AT&T account to find out--you'll pay $399 and $499 respectively. Either way, you'll pay $15 more per month ($74.99 total) for a plan comparable with the original iPhone ($59 per month). So, while you'll pay less outright to buy the handset, you'll make it up over the course of a standard two-year AT&T contract.

So should you buy an iPhone 3G? If you haven't bought an iPhone yet, and have been holding out for a new model, now is the time. If you're a current iPhone owner and you're yearning for a faster cellular network, then you should take the plunge. But if you're an iPhone owner who won't use 3G (or can't; check your coverage at AT&T), then you should stick with your current model. The iPhone 2.0 software update provides Exchange server support, third-party apps support, and many new features without the added cost.

Design

You'd be hard-pressed to notice any design differences on the front of the iPhone 3G. The minor changes--the silver rim is thinner and the silver mesh behind the speaker--are so minimal we didn't notice them for a few hours after picking up the device. Turn the phone on its side, however, and you'll see more changes. Apple has replaced the aluminum silver back with a plastic face in either white or black. The black version (our review model) is attractive, but we admit that we miss the original silver, which shows fewer fingerprints and smudges than the shiny black version. The white model is not our cup of tea.

The iPhone 3G's edges are slightly tapered to accommodate the curved back, making the device thinner around its perimeter than its predecessor, but a hair thicker (0.48 inch versus 0.46 inch) in the gut. Unfortunately, the curved back makes the iPhone 3G wobble slightly if you use it while resting on a table--which quickly becomes annoying. The phone's height and width measurements (5.5 inches by 2.4 inches) remain the same, though it weighs just a tiny bit less (4.7 ounces versus 4.8 ounces).

At 3.5 inches and 480x320 pixels, the display is the same size as its predecessor, but displays slightly more dots per inch (163 vs.160), and still cranks out brilliant colors, sharp graphics, and fluid movements. The layout of the home screen is identical to that on the first version, though you'll see two new icons from the outset: A Contacts icon takes you directly to your phone book, and the App Store icon opens the iTunes App Store. The display's glass surface, accelerometer feature, touch interface, and secondary menus remain the same.

The iPhone's 3G controls reveal a few changes, but none will surprise a current iPhone user. The Home button sits below the display, while the volume rocker and ringer mute switch rest on the left spine. The Power/sleep button rests on top of the phone in its normal position. All controls are now silver instead of black. The SIM card slot hasn't moved either, and Apple now includes a SIM removal tool in the box. The bottom of the iPhone houses the speaker, the microphone, and the charger port, but you'll also notice two tiny screws on either side of the charger jack. Think maybe you'll be able to replace your own battery now? Bummer: The battery is still not user-replaceable, so we don't recommend trying it (although we hear the battery is no longer soldered down). We're very pleased that the iPhone 3G's 3.5mm headset jack now sits flush with the surface of the phone allowing you to use any 3.5mm headset you like; you're no longer restricted to a headset that can fit in the previous phone's inane recessed jack.

In the box you'll find the syncing cable, a display cleaning cloth, a headset, user documentation, the aforementioned SIM removal tool, and an electrical outlet plug. The plug is pleasantly smaller than on the original iPhone's, but it's compatible with a standard USB cable. On the downside, you don't get a syncing dock. If you want one, you have to shell out $30 for it (boo!), and Apple made sure the iPhone 3G won't fit in the first iPhone's dock.

Features
The iPhone 3G hangs on to all the original iPhone features and throws in a few more, so we'll concentrate on what's new. Lucky for first-gen iPhone owners, most of the impressive array of additions--save 3G support and enhanced GPS--come along with the free 2.0 software update. For more on the organizer features, stocks and weather widgets, YouTube app, notepad, threaded texting, and visual voicemail, see our original iPhone review.

Exchange server support
Worker bees worldwide have awaited the iPhone 3G's full support for Microsoft Exchange server. In our tests, adding an Exchange account was ridiculously easy once we had the correct settings from our IT department--simply choose to add a new e-mail account in the main Settings menu, and you'll be taken to the standard list of available e-mail systems. "Microsoft Exchange" and "MobileMe" will appear at the top of the list just above the choice for Gmail. You'll then be prompted to enter the applicable e-mail address, domain/username, server, and password. The authentication process took just a couple of minutes. Installing CNET's security certificate posed a bit of a challenge, but we eventually succeeded by mailing the certificate to ourselves through Yahoo Mail.
